In the SEMPER project we are developing an interactive web-based platform that assists patients to self-manage their health problems. Apart from disease-specific information, the platform will offer on-line assessment, access to self-help groups as well as personalized monitoring and feedback. This will be achieved by translating people’s personal action plans into Web-based format and visualizing a person’s progress and compliance with his or her therapeutic goals.
Above all, the project will provide a proof of concept for an innovative approach to apply semantic technologies for accessing and personalising information. For this purpose, we will use the ai-one™ algorithm (see www.ai-one.com) from semantic system ag (www.semantic.ch), a high-tech company with headquarters in Zurich, which has been recognized as one of the most innovative enterprises.
The application partners expect to reach new target groups and gain a leading edge in the highly competitive eHealth sector. The pilot system will focus on work-related disorders such as back pain and the treatment of alcoholism. However, the basic approach and system architecture can be easily transferred to other health problems or areas of application.
The SEMPER project started in May 2009 and will run for 30 months with the first 18 months dedicated to requirements analysis and system development, and the subsequent 12 months dedicated to testing in real-life settings. The project is funded by CTI, the Swiss agency for the promotion of innovation (No: 9937.2 PFES-ES).
As an accompanying measure, a group of researchers has been investigating possible indicators for measuring the cost-effectiveness of preventive measures.
